Capitol Hill Light Rail Guide: Schedules, Tips, and What's Nearby
There's something about coming up from Capitol Hill station and stepping straight into the middle of everything. Broadway, Pike, Pine, Cal Anderson Park all within a few blocks. The neighborhood just hits you. Whether you're a regular or just visiting for the day, here's a rundown of what you should know about this stop.
Where is it exactly?
Broadway between John and Denny. You can't really miss the entrance: big glass canopy, bank of escalators on the east side of the street. If you're riding from University of Washington or coming up from Westlake, you're on the 1 Line. Capitol Hill sits right in the middle of that route.
Fair warning though: this station is underground. And not just a little underground. About 130 feet deep. The escalator ride is genuinely long. Like, "you could scroll through an entire news article on the way down" long. I'll circle back to why that matters in a minute.
Train schedule
First trains roll through around 5am, last ones around midnight. During rush hour (roughly 6 to 9am and 3 to 6pm), expect a train every 8 to 10 minutes. Off-peak, more like 10 to 15. Weekends lean toward the longer gaps between trains. We put together a detailed light rail hours guide covering the full schedule. For real-time info, check Sound Transit's schedules or fire up OneBusAway.
What's around the station?
Plenty. You walk out onto Broadway and Pike and Pine run east toward the main retail strip, restaurants, bars, all of it. Broadway itself is lined with coffee shops and the usual Capitol Hill mix of quirky and trendy. Cal Anderson Park is a short stroll away. Great for decompressing, tossing a frisbee, or just sitting on a bench and watching dogs. Seattle Central College is right there too if you need a landmark.
If you're feeling ambitious, Volunteer Park (the one with the water tower you see in every Seattle photo) is about a 15 to 20 minute walk uphill from the station. Totally worth the trek on a clear day. The Conservatory alone is a nice little escape.
Stuff I wish somebody had told me
Those escalators. They absolutely eat time. If you're trying to catch a specific train, budget 3 to 4 extra minutes just for the descent. There is nothing worse than jogging down 130 feet of escalator only to watch the train doors close in your face. And the ride back up is no joke either. Not instant by any stretch.
The station has bike lockers if you're pedaling in. And your ORCA card is good on Link, buses, and the streetcar. No need to juggle different fare stuff.
If you're tired of pulling out your phone every time you want to know when the next train arrives, something like NextStop Mini on your desk or kitchen counter can show you real-time predictions for Capitol Hill and whatever other stops you care about. Handy when you're scrambling to get out the door.
TL;DR
Capitol Hill station. Broadway between John and Denny. Underground and deep. Long escalators (seriously, factor them in). Trains every 8 to 15 minutes depending on time of day. First train around 5am, last around midnight. Pike/Pine corridor, Cal Anderson, Seattle Central, Volunteer Park all walkable. ORCA works. Give yourself extra time for the escalator ride and you'll be golden.
